Injuries in the shoulder occur commonly in the overhead-throwing athlete. These injuries are commonly due to overuse and fatigue. Young athletes nowadays are over-training and are playing multiple games throughout the week without appropriate strength training. The overhead throwing motion is a very complex and skillful movement. This movement requires adequate mobility and functional stability, the balance between these 2 can be compromised and can result in injury. Commonly, these throwing athletes have excessive mobility but weak shoulder and scapular musculature. It is very important that these athletes have adequate strength in their rotator cuff and in their periscapular musculature especially in the overhead position, this is commonly overlooked. At Premier Physical Therapy, we are able to address these deficiencies in order to prevent injuries or help you recover from an existing injury to get you back in the game!
